Susan Cossaboon

Project Coordinator

This quote describes Susan, our Project Coordinator, and happens to be one of her favorites. Susan is a native of Concord and graduate of King's College with a degree in business & accounting. Twenty years ago, Susan responded to a blind advertisement for an accounting position and today says, "I've been at The Byrd's Group so long, I really can't see myself anywhere else. I love working here because it's a family owned & operated company with great values and ethics." Susan is a vital member of our team ensuring that customer billing is accurate & timely, providing exceptional customer service, and handling various other responsibilities that help our company provide high quality service. Cabarrus County is still home to her close-knit family and when she isn't working Susan enjoys spending time with her husband, 2 children and 2 granddaughters. She also likes to bake, garden, and cuddle up with a heated blanket all year long.

Sandra Cruz

Payroll Processor

Sandra Cruz joined our team in March of 2021 as our Bi-lingual Payroll Processor. Her smile welcomes visitors, prospective applicants, and our employees. She says "the friendly environment of our team and our enthusiasm" are why she enjoys working at The Byrd's Group. Originally from Colombia, Sandra moved to the United States in 2011, with her two daughters. Today, she is the proud mom of a chemist and a nursing student. Sandra has worked in payroll for much of her career, starting out at a shoe manufacturer in Colombia. Her passions lie in cooking various cuisines, going to church, being a "plant mom," and if she could choose a different career, it would be interior design. Sandra shares this quote from Rhonda Kulcyzk, "nothing is more impressive than a person who is secure in the unique way God made her."

Giovanni Jarrin

Office Manager

After living all over the US, as well as in Ecuador, and working in a variety of roles from taxidermy to accounting, Gio made his home in Charlotte and with The Byrd's Group, in 2010. Originally applying for a Payroll Processor position, Gio has become an invaluable asset as our Office Manager. You'll always find Gio with a pen & notepad, taking the advice of his wife, Dolores, "The dullest pencil is better than the sharpest mind." Gio's experience, attention to detail, empathetic & jovial personality, and integrity encourage the work ethic, values, and family atmosphere of our team. When he is not working, Gio enjoys spending time with his family and experimenting with a variety of cooking styles.

Whitney Ryan

Director of Marketing

Whitney's passion for marketing began during high school, thanks to the influence of her DECA advisor, Mrs. Herbster. She developed a love for business, marketing and most importantly, people, and has applied that passion over the years. Her experience began in landscaping and transitioned to healthcare, in Northern Virginia, where she lived for 12 years. Whitney joined our team in late 2020 after returning to the Charlotte area, to focus on recruitment and brand marketing. "I invest my time and talents at The Byrd's Group, because this company has provided for me. My grandfather started this company before I was born, and my dad has helped grow it for most of my life. I am proud to be able to utilize the skills I've developed elsewhere, to continue to grow the legacy of who Byrd's Lawn & Landscaping started out as and who The Byrd's Group has grown into." Whitney has a passion for investing in people, first and foremost, her kids Dillon & Blair. She enjoys welcoming family & friends into her home where she can try out new recipes or share a perfect cup of coffee. When she has a rare moment to herself, she enjoys being outside or watching a Hallmark movie - she's probably seen every movie made, despite them all ending the same!

Alejandro Barrios

Landscape Installation Operations Manager

Alejandro joined The Byrd's Group in 2001 as a laborer. In less than a week, he was promoted to Irrigation Foreman and has continued to excel over the last two decades. He now invests his time as the Landscape Installation Operations Manager and works diligently to train his team to follow in his footsteps. His background in electrical & electronic engineering, along with his NC Irrigation & Landscape Contractor licenses have proven to be invaluable assets to the impeccable work his teams produce. When asked why he likes working for The Byrd's Group, Alejandro shares that the team environment is one of the reasons he has chosen to work for Byrd's for the last 20 years. Alejandro is driven by honesty & commitment. When he isn't working, he enjoys spending time with his family & fishing.

Mack Stewart

Landscape Enhancements Supervisor

Mack joined The Byrd's Group as an Irrigation Specialist in the summer of 2020 and was quickly promoted to Enhancements Supervisor in the fall of 2020. Mack grew up in Cabarrus County and developed an interest in landscaping after working as a farm hand, in home restoration & construction and later for another landscaping company. Mack says that he's driven by his desire to make properties look good & work properly. He pursues that sense of accomplishment with every new project and has quickly become an invaluable asset to our team. When he's not working, Mack enjoys riding his motorcycle and is a connoisseur of political theology & philosophy. Mack lives by the quote from Vivian Greene, "Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass but learning to dance in the rain."

Rick Malarkey

Landscape Management Operations Manager

Rick moved to Charlotte, from upstate New York, and joined The Byrd's Group in 2006. Rick began as a Landscape Maintenance Supervisor and has been promoted several times. He now spends his days mentoring our Landscape Maintenance Department as the Operations Manager. His engaging personality, commitment to customer care, and quality of work, are regularly complimented by his customers & team. Rick says that his favorite thing about working for The Byrd's Group is the family environment and the way the employees are treated by the owners. When Rick isn't working, you can find him spending time with his family, browsing Facebook Marketplace for a deal, reminiscing about his 8 trips to the Super Bowl or creating his latest woodworking masterpiece.

James Lenga

Business Development Manager

James joined The Byrd's Group in 2015 as an Account Manager after relocating from upstate New York. No stranger to developing relationships with customers, James fondly shares stories of his paper route when he was 13. It was there that he began to learn the importance of meeting the individual needs of each client. Eventually, James found a love for landscaping while working to support his college education. His determination and attention to customer needs are just a few reasons why James has been promoted to our Business Development Manager. When James isn't working with our customers, you can find him spending time with his family & friends, practicing his carpentry skills or praying for a Super Bowl win for his beloved Buffalo Bills.

Brent Fink

Account Manager

Brent was born and raised in the Charlotte area. He developed an interest in agriculture & landscaping thanks to his high school teacher Mr. Latta and later graduated from his alma mater, NC State. Brent's degree in Ornamentals, Landscape Technology & Agricultural Business are valuable resources to his position as Landscape Maintenance Account Manager. Brent joined our team in 2016 as Project Estimator and worked his way up to our management team. Today, he works with his team to develop their skill sets and encourage their growth within The Byrd's Group. Brent says that honesty, hard work, and the family environment of his team are what drive him to grow within our organization. Away from work, Brent spends time with his wife & son, plays golf, and enjoys long walks on the beach.

Ian Waller

Account Manager

Ian joined The Byrd's Group in 2016 after a lifetime of landscape experience. Growing up in Detroit, Michigan, his experience began by helping his grandmother in her garden and developed by making extra money mowing lawns, and shoveling snow in his neighborhood. Eventually that grew into running his own successful landscaping company. Looking for a change of pace and warmer weather, Ian relocated to the Charlotte area and brought his talents to The Byrd's Group. Ian began as an Installation Foreman and has worked his way up to Landscape Maintenance Account Manager. When asked why he likes working for Byrd's, Ian says he "enjoys working for Mr. Byrd, the hardest working person I know." When Ian isn't managing his team, he can be found hiking, backpacking, camping, and exploring the outdoors with his dog Tilly. His personal goal is to summit the highest elevation point in all 50 states.

Peter Comire

Shop Manager

In 2017, Peter came to The Byrd's Group as a tire service sales representative. He made such an exceptional impression on our team, he left that day, with a job offer. Peter's work ethic was developed at a young age, working at Sub Station II. If you know Peter, it's no surprise that he was granted early admission to college at age 16. Peter continues to provide that exceptional service as he oversees the management & repair of all vehicles and equipment that make The Byrd's Group so efficient. Time spent with his wife, daughter & son are Peter's favorite activities when he's not at work. Peter says he works hard to provide for his family and believes the old saying, "happy wife, happy life!"

Greg Blue


Greg's love for working as a mechanic began during his first job as a sweeper at Midwest Motorsports in Mooresville. In 2019, Greg found a home for his skills at The Byrd's Group, after responding to a blind ad for a mechanic. Much to his surprise, The Byrd's Group was the company and he was very familiar with our organization after working for one of our equipment vendors. Greg works as a small engine mechanic ensuring that the tools our employees use, daily, are in pristine working order. He says that the family atmosphere is one of the reasons he enjoys working here. Greg's days outside of work are spent raising his teenage daughter and their family of chickens.

Tommy Heavner


Tommy joined our team in 2019 after working in law enforcement and serving our country as a proud Veteran. Tommy joined our team when his friend, Greg, told him we were expanding our mechanic team. Tommy brings the intricate skill set of machining & metal fabricating to our team. He provides high quality service to our equipment and helps keep our team running smoothly. His hard work is always accompanied by his key values: honesty, loyalty, quality, and a few words of wisdom, "the only easy day was yesterday." When not at work, Tommy enjoys a good Christmas tree bonfire, shooting guns, and hunting.
